Adventurer Guided Mobile Okavango

Overview

The Okavango Delta is a top safari highlight in Botswana, and this adventurous tour allows you to appreciate its splendour from two unique and equally beautiful locations.

Accommodation is in down-to-earth mobile camps that have a very light eco-footprint, making this experience ideal for couples and independent travellers seeking an authentic and unpretentious safari in remote parts of the Delta.

Your journey begins in the safari gateway town of Maun and moves via road transfer to Moremi Game Reserve – the most protected part of the Okavango’s waterways, wetlands and prolific wildlife. It is an excellent place to see leopard and wild dog – both very rare and endangered predator species – and it is also home to large populations of elephant, buffalo, lion, giraffe and zebra.

Your second and final destination lies just outside the Moremi Game Reserve on a private wildlife concession known as the Khwai Community Area. Here, in addition to daily game drives, you are able to enjoy water-based safaris on traditional canoes known as mekoro, as well as spot-lit night drives in search of hunting predators, aardvark, honey badgers and other mysterious nocturnal creatures.

Days 1-3

Marvellous wildlife at Moremi

Your tour begins in Maun, Botswana’s gateway city to the Okavango Delta. After meeting your guide in the morning, you will set out on a road transfer to Moremi Game Reserve for the first exciting leg of your safari adventure.

Guests arriving later in the day can opt for a light aircraft flight to Moremi, which is a great opportunity to get a bird’s-eye view of elephants walking among the mopane trees, large herds grazing on the plains, and even pods of hippo bathing in the waterways below. You will spend three nights at Letaka Tented Camp and explore the Xakanaxa region of Moremi Game Reserve on guided game drives. Lantern-lit evenings are reserved for drinks around the fire, recounting the day’s sightings, and falling asleep to the sounds of the African night through the canvas walls of your tented suite.

Moremi is located on the eastern edge of the Okavango Delta, and its habitat includes floodplains, marshes, lagoons, channels lined with papyrus, woodlands, and savannah. This huge diversity supports an abundance of wildlife that you will track in a customised 4×4 vehicle, guided by a highly knowledgeable ranger. A highlight for many safari-goers is the opportunity to sight African wild dog, and Moremi is known as a top African destination to spot these rare canids.

Lion, buffalo and elephant are some of the iconic members of the Big 5 that occur in abundance on the reserve, and birders will be thrilled with the variation of birdlife at the Delta – from migratory species and swamp specialists to raptors hunting over the open waters.

Days 4-6

Explore the Khwai Community Area

Bid farewell to Moremi on a slow game drive north-east following the Manuchira Channel along scenic floodplains, mopane bush and woodlands, stopping to view the resident hippos at Dombo Pools.

You might spot a lone elephant bull bathing in the channel, and keep an eye open for huge crocodiles, leopard, cheetah and lion as you pass through their territory. Your journey’s end is Letaka Tented Camp set in the Khwai Community Area, and here you will continue on your exploration of the famous Okavango Delta in search of big game, and perhaps some smaller species like semi-aquatic lechwe antelope, African wildcat and serval.

As it is a private wildlife reserve, you are able to enjoy thrilling night drives and mokoro excursions in addition to daily game drives. A mokoro is a traditional canoe that allows your guide to navigate you through the Delta and get close the fascinating plant life and a plethora water birds and fearless raptors such as rosy-throated long claws, bat hawks, cuckoo hawks, long-crested eagles and more. As in Moremi, Letaka Tented Camp at Khwai offers an authentic camping experience where you are invited to truly connect with your natural surroundings.

Walk-in tents are fitted with comfortable camp beds, a covered outdoor area and an adjoining bathroom. At the end of a long day in the wilderness, you can indulge in a hot bucket shower that is heated for you in the traditional way – over the campfire – before enjoying a sumptuous dinner and retiring for the night.
