Fly-In Safari Guide: What to Expect on a Bush Plane Transfer

What Is a Fly-In Safari?

A fly-in safari uses small light aircraft — typically 5–12 seat Cessna, Pilatus PC-12, or similar — to transfer between remote lodges and safari destinations that are inaccessible by road or would require many hours of driving. Fly-in safaris are standard in Botswana’s Okavango Delta, Zambia’s remote national parks, Tanzania’s northern circuit, and increasingly across Kenya’s private conservancy network. They offer a dramatic aerial perspective on African wilderness, allow you to cover vast distances between destinations, and are the practical solution for accessing the most exclusive, remote lodges on the continent.

How Big Are Safari Planes?

Most bush plane transfers in Africa use small 4–8 seat aircraft. Cessna 208 Caravan (up to 9 passengers) and Cessna 182 or 206 (4–5 passengers) are the most common. In Tanzania, larger operators like Coastal Aviation and Air Excel use fleets of Caravans and Cessna 172s on scheduled circuits connecting Arusha, the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, and Zanzibar. Botswana’s Okavango Delta uses primarily small 5–6 seat aircraft operating between remote bush airstrips. Flight times are typically 20–90 minutes between lodges.

What Are the Luggage Restrictions on Bush Planes?

Luggage restrictions on bush aircraft are strict and non-negotiable. The standard limit is 15 kg (33 lbs) per person in total — soft-sided bags only (no hard-shell suitcases, which cannot be loaded into aircraft cargo holds). A soft duffel bag measuring no more than 25cm x 30cm x 62cm is the standard requirement. Most operators are strict about this; excess or oversize luggage may be left behind or charged an oversize fee. Plan your safari wardrobe around lightweight clothing in neutral colours and pack in a purpose-made safari duffel bag.

Is Flying in a Bush Plane Safe?

Bush flying in Africa has an excellent safety record with reputable operators. Licensed charter operators in Botswana, Tanzania, Kenya, and South Africa operate under strict Civil Aviation Authority regulations with regular aircraft maintenance requirements and pilot certification standards. Choose established, nationally licensed operators — your lodge or tour operator will book these on your behalf. Avoid unlicensed informal transfers. Weather conditions in Africa can occasionally delay or reroute flights; this is normal and operators prioritise safety over schedule.

What Do You See on a Bush Flight?

The aerial perspective from a bush plane is one of safari’s great pleasures. Flying over the Okavango Delta reveals the extraordinary scale of the inland delta — channels, islands, and flood plains spreading to the horizon. A flight over the Serengeti during migration season gives an incomprehensible view of the herds’ scale — a brown mass covering the plains stretching to the horizon. Elephants are easily spotted from the air near waterholes; hippo pods in rivers, giraffe among acacia trees, and the geometric patchwork of flood plains and woodland are all visible from 500–2,000 feet.

Best Fly-In Safari Destinations

Okavango Delta, Botswana: Virtually all lodges are only accessible by light aircraft. The Delta fly-in safari is the standard format — fly from Maun to your island lodge, then between lodges as you move through the Delta.

Tanzania Northern Circuit: Fly between Arusha, Serengeti (multiple airstrips), Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, and Zanzibar without long road transfers.

Zambia — South Luangwa and Kafue: Both require fly-in access from Lusaka or Mfuwe; road access in wet season is impractical.

Kenya — Remote Conservancies: Laikipia Plateau, Samburu, and northern Kenya conservancies are most efficiently reached by charter flight from Nairobi Wilson Airport.
