Africa Safari Visa Guide: Entry Requirements for South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania and Botswana

Do You Need a Visa for an African Safari?

Visa requirements for Africa’s main safari destinations vary significantly by passport. Most Western passport holders (US, UK, EU, Australia, Canada, New Zealand) can enter South Africa, Botswana, Kenya, and Tanzania with either no visa required or a visa-on-arrival / e-visa that can be obtained before departure. Requirements do change, and always verify current requirements with the relevant embassy or official government portal before travel.

South Africa Visa Requirements

Citizens of the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and New Zealand generally do not require a visa for tourist visits of up to 90 days. EU passport holders should check their individual nationality’s permitted stay. South Africa does not have a pre-arrival e-visa system for these nationalities — entry is granted at the port of arrival. Your passport must be valid for at least 30 days beyond your intended departure date and must contain at least 2 blank pages. Documentation requirements for children depend on nationality and who accompanies them. Check current Department of Home Affairs guidance for your family’s circumstances before travel.

Kenya Visa Requirements

Kenya uses an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) system rather than the former tourist e-visa system. Travellers who are not exempt must obtain approval before departure through etakenya.go.ke. Standard applications start at USD 30, with processing generally taking three working days, although some applications take longer. Exemptions apply to several nationalities, including South African passport holders. Check your eligibility and apply well before travel. For itineraries including Uganda or Rwanda, check each country’s entry requirements separately.

Tanzania Visa Requirements

Tanzania requires a visa for most nationalities. An ordinary single-entry tourist visa costs USD 50 and can be requested through Tanzania’s official visa portal. Apply at least two weeks before departure. US passport holders must apply for a USD 100 multiple-entry visa, even for a single tourist visit.

Your passport must have at least six months’ validity and one unused visa page. Yellow fever vaccination is required when arriving from a yellow-fever-risk country, including qualifying transits of 12 hours or more.

Mandatory inbound travel insurance also applies to eligible foreign visitors. Check the current requirements and exemptions for mainland Tanzania or Zanzibar before travelling.

Botswana Visa Requirements

Botswana is visa-free for citizens of the US, UK, EU countries, Australia, Canada and New Zealand for tourist stays of up to 90 days in a calendar year, subject to immigration approval. No advance visa application is required for these travellers. Your passport should generally be valid for at least six months. Sir Seretse Khama International Airport in Gaborone is a major international gateway, while safari travellers commonly use Maun Airport for the Okavango Delta or Kasane Airport for Chobe.

Zimbabwe and Zambia: KAZA UniVisa

If your itinerary includes Victoria Falls — which straddles Zimbabwe and Zambia — the KAZA UniVisa (USD 50) allows multiple entries into both countries over 30 days and is available on arrival at Victoria Falls Airport and Livingstone Airport.

Eligibility depends on nationality. Botswana day trips through Kazungula are covered under the scheme, but an overnight stay in Botswana can invalidate the UniVisa; confirm the correct visa arrangements for your route.

Yellow Fever and Health Requirements

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required by several African countries if arriving from a yellow fever-endemic country. Tanzania and Kenya require proof of vaccination for travellers arriving from endemic areas. Carry your yellow fever certificate (International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis, ICVP yellow card) in your travel documents at all times. Consult your travel medicine clinic 8–12 weeks before departure.

Requirements may also apply after transit through a yellow-fever-risk country. Tanzania includes transits of 12 hours or more; where vaccination is required, it should normally be administered at least 10 days before entry.
