Sindabezi Island Camp

Overview

Located on a private island in the Zambezi River, Sindabezi is a small and exclusive camp that sleeps 10 people in five open-fronted thatched chalets dotted along the shore among the trees.

The majestic river flows directly past the rooms, which are built on stilts just above the water, which gives life to hippos, crocodiles, elephants and an array of birdlife.

This award-winning eco-lodge is solar powered, and adding further romance to the ambiance are hurricane lamps that provide the only source of light after dark. Sindabezi’s sister property, Tongabezi Lodge – a short boat trip away – offers activities that include trips to the Victoria Falls, boat cruises and canoeing and fishing.

Visit Africa’s favourite water feature, the Victoria Falls, and witness ‘the smoke that thunders’ from the Zambian side (for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, coincide your trip with full moon to experience an incredible lunar rainbow over the falls). Raise your adrenalin levels battling grade 4 and 5 rapids on an exhilarating white-water rafting trip down the mighty Zambezi.

Try to land a feisty tiger fish or hit the quieter channels for some fly-fishing in breathtaking surroundings. Spot big game on a 4×4 game drive through the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park, which boasts a tropical rainforest growing in the spray of the falls. Clink glasses of bubbly with a loved one as the setting sun paints a dazzling picture on the Zambezi’s sparkling waters during an open-air boat cruise.

Or simply stay put and enjoy personalised hospitality while soaking up marvellous river views or having a soothing massage treatment.

Sindabezi is suited to seasoned travellers looking for a barefoot-luxury wilderness experience that includes open-air bathrooms. Prioritising romance, privacy and seclusion, this solar-powered riverside camp offers a sanctuary from where eco-conscious guests can enjoy the best of the region from exclusive accommodation founded on exceptional service.

Facilities

Sindabezi’s sister property, Tongabezi Lodge is a 20-minute boat trip away and offers numerous activities, ranging from day trips to see Victoria Falls and sunset boat cruises, to quad biking (ATVs), scenic helicopter flights and cultural tours.

The rustically gorgeous riverside chalets are connected by a wooden walkway and sandy pathways to the communal area where a covered dining area, cosy lounge and bar make guests feel right at home.

There are several small secluded areas to relax away from other guests while enjoying superb river views.

The Tongabezi Trust School is an education facility set up by the owners of the lodge – who also own Sindabezi – for the teaching of underprivileged children in the surrounding community and can be visited by guests from either property.

Dining

Enjoy meals under the thatched gazebo alongside the river teeming with wildlife. Breakfast starts with a small buffet before English-style options are cooked to order. Intimate lunches are occasionally served right on the sand just metres from the water’s edge or in the comfort of your open-fronted suite.

The absence of electricity adds to the charm and romance of mealtimes with the soft light of hurricane lamps illuminating the delicately laid tables. As a special treat guests are taken out by boat at sunset to a table floating in the middle of the river where they enjoy a 3-course dinner by lantern light.

You might even spot an elephant swimming across to the island!

Rooms

The thatched chalets built on stilts above the water are open-fronted to offer totally unobstructed river views.

The en suite bathroom faces the water and is complete with beautiful brass fittings, free-standing tubs and a ‘loo-with-a-view’. The decorative elements complement the neutral tones of the natural surroundings with wooden floors and high ceilings creating a relaxing space.

The quaint sundeck outside the front is equipped with furniture made for lazing around and an outdoor, solar-powered shower. Your only light-source is romantic hurricane lamps, of which you will find plenty in your suite.

This is ‘unplugged’ at its truest (camera and phones may be charged in the main lodge).

The charming honeymoon chalet has an outside claw-foot bathtub built onto the sundeck.
