Oude Werf Hotel

Overview

Oude Werf’s history can be traced back to 1802, when it was constructed on the remains of Stellenbosch’s first church, which had been built in 1687. Each of the 58 rooms has modern finishes and fashionable furnishings while its eco-consciousness is absolutely part of the 21st century. Believed to harbor the odd (friendly) ghost, the suites at Oude Werf overlook the poolside gardens or vine-covered courtyard. Stellenbosch is known for its Mediterranean climate as there are hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters but guests here will be calm no matter what the weather. it is suitably positioned on one of this quaint university town’s main streets letting you wander under its famous oaks and also allows you easy access to drive to the surrounding wine estates. Dining

Oude Werf’s dining history dates back the 19th century when Tant Betje Wium created her hearty country dishes for grateful guests. Today the hotel’s restaurant has an in-situ kitchen, a busy fireplace for winter evenings and a pleasant courtyard as well as a street side veranda for alfresco meals. Breakfast includes everything from a traditional buffet of seasonal fruit, local cheese and pastries to a cooked breakfast like smoked salmon crumpets or eggs and freshly brewed barista coffee. For lunch, try something that takes its influences from customary South African cuisine like Cape snoek fishcakes, a ‘bunny chow’ (curry served in a hollowed-out loaf of soft white bread) or boerewors, a sausage served with a type of polenta known as ‘krummel pap’. Afternoon nibbles also reference South Africa with flimsy pastries known as ‘hertzoggies’ and mini milk tarts, along with cookies, cakes and flavorful snacks for high tea. Dinner sees traditional Cape flavors being given a modern twist, all using excellent local ingredients. Think opening with a soup made with Karoo venison biltong (a traditional dried meat) topped with a tasty vetkoek. Or tuck into Atlantic salmon accompanied by outstanding South African wine.
