Madikwe Safari Lodge's Lelapa Lodge welcomes children and offers special activities for younger travelers, including family safaris, bug CSI, bush orientation, small game tracking, baking, stargazing and more. Children through age 5 stay for free while children ages 6 to 15 pay half price. Game drives are not available to children under age 2. Children between 2 and 5 are only allowed on special family drives.
Madikwe Game Reserve is located in an area where malaria-carrying mosquitoes are not present, so the reserve and the surrounding area are considered a malaria-free zone. While safari travel is considered generally safe, any kind of outdoor activity carries some risk of injury.
The climate of the region indicates wet, hot summers from September to April and dry, cool winters from May to August. The average temperature is about 77 degrees, but it can get especially hot during midsummer heatwaves and very cold at night in midwinter. This is a semi-arid region with about 19.5 inches of rain per year, mostly failing in brief thunderstorms in the late afternoon or at night and between November and March.
Fly from O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) on the daily Federal Air flight to Madikwe's airfield, departing at 1 p.m. The lodge is a quick 10-minute drive from the airfield. You can choose to drive from Johannesburg if you prefer. The drive is about 4.5 hours. You can also reach Madikwe by car from Gaborone, Botswana. This drive takes about 2 hours. Note that traveling on gravel roads is required, but a safari vehicle is not required to make the drive.
