Huntingdon House

Overview

With a history dating back to 1890, the Satemwa Tea Estate, which grows some of Malawi’s finest tea and coffee, is home to the elegant Huntingdon House. Originally built for the owner, Huntingdon House is a house with five bedrooms in an elegant living style that attracts honeymooners, couples, and adventurers who want to explore the glorious Shire Highlands. Guests staying at the original rooms have all the attributes of the past: high ceilings, antique furniture, and paintings, four-poster beds and views of the manicured lawn. There is also an independent ground floor cottage for those who want to experience the typical country life.

While the atmosphere can be quiet, there are many activities at Huntingdon House. Mountain bikers can use the eight domain bicycles on the dirt-road, while hikers can put on their boots and make their way through the 170 km of slopes – most trained hikers would like to tackle the Mount Mulanje. Stock up on a picnic with Huntingdon staff on the trip. You can also enjoy walks in search of Thyolo Alethe.

Huntingdon House’s staff understands the process of making green sprout tea. So take a tour in the emerald fields in front of the delicious tea sampling, with pastries and sandwiches in the old style in the large shady terrace or the shade of a speckled centenary tree in the garden.

Dining

A small team of dedicated chefs prepares complete meals, with menus that change daily based on time requirements, personal preferences and the availability of seasonal ingredients. Each meal is prepared with fresh ingredients from their garden, such as local organic milk and honey from a bee project nearby. You can have breakfast on the terrace, eat in the gardens, enjoy a picnic on Mount Thyolo or have tea on the veranda. Dine in the formal dining room with loads of snow-covered tablecloths filled with fresh flowers and the soft candlelight or in a secret corner of the courtyard.
