Londolozi Game Reserve

Londolozi Game Reserve

Featuring great five-star lodges and excellent Big Five viewing opportunities, Londolozi Game Reserve is a private reserve within the famed Sabi Sand Game Reserve. Sabi Sand, in turn, shares an unfenced border with Kruger National Park, perhaps the most famous African safari destination. Together, these open properties form a massive ecosystem that makes for some of the best game viewing experience anywhere.

Londolozi, located in the middle of Sabi Sand and near the Sand River, was started by the respected Varty family more than 8 decades ago and enjoys a long and very positive history. The family members were true pioneers in game reserves. In fact, this family is responsible for introducing leopards into Sabi Sand, something for which the reserve is well-known today. Londolozi is still a stand-alone family-run operation.

In all, 5 great lodges are located on Londolozi Game Reserve. Each has fine food and excellent service, but they differ significantly in price and style. And since Londolozi is a large property – it covers more than 250 square miles – and only allows limited traversing rights to others, wildlife sightings never get crowded.

Londolozi is especially known for its conservation efforts. In fact, the name is Zulu for ‘a protector of living things’. Progressive and farsighted land management and wildlife rehab programs mean this lodge is doing what it can to make sure that a natural African safari environment endures for future generations.

Among the things you will surely like about Londolozi Game Reserve include the following:

On the downside, staying on Londolozi Game Reserve requires choosing a fully inclusive package, which can get expensive. Also, there are so many opportunities for seeing Big Five game that some interesting smaller species may be passed by without time to enjoy them.

More About Wildlife At Londolozi

The landscape at Londolozi Game Reserve is exclusively woodland savannah. Foliage can be thick in many areas, but rangers and trackers are highly skilled at their jobs and are allowed to drive off-road, so they put you at the best possible vantage point.

There are more than 300 bird species that you may see at Londolozi and elsewhere on the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, making this area a particularly good birding destination. Guides usually know quite a lot about birds. When you add walking safaris to your scheduled game drives, you will see more birds. Keep in mind, however, that this and other private game reserves put an emphasis on mammals, so booking a private game drive for birding is sensible for the best possible experience.

Visit Londolozi Game Reserve from November to April for the best birding. This is when migratory birds are present from North America and Europe.

Best Time To Visit

In general, you'll have the best experience at this game reserve when you visit in winter. There are fewer guests during this time and foliage is at a minimum. Viewing opportunities improve as the dry season progresses and animals come out looking for water at watering holes, so September is generally considered the best time to visit. It's also less cold than other winter months. Choosing to visit from October to April means more greenery, the possibility of newborn animals and a lot of human crowding.
