Sossusvlei

Sossusvlei

The rolling sand dunes of Sossusvlei in the Namibia Desert are regarded as the highest dunes around the globe. Situated in the Namib Naukluft Park, one of the biggest preservation areas in Africa, and the fourth largest in the world, these sand dunes present at Sossusvlei are a must visit when you holiday in Namibia.

Hiking to the top of Big Mama, as the locals call it, is worth experiencing when you visit Sossusvlei. From the top of the mountain, you can see Naravlei; which has been named after the uncountable cucumber shaped melons growing all around the edge of the pan. Thel Nara plant is an important source of food for the wildlife that dwells in the desert.

Cessna Pan, located to the east, and the gravelly folds of Witberg have proved to be a valued landmark for explorers over all these years. Dead Vlei is at the foot of Big Mama. The dead camelthorn trees, some over eight hundred years old, stand helplessly as photographers’ universal attempt to capture that unique, youthful desert shot which makes it a perfect place for nature photographers.
