Gorongosa

Gorongosa

Established formerly as a hunting reserve in the year 1920, Gorongosa turned into a National Park in the year 1960 during the month of July. Initially ravaged by civil strives, peace has now once again returned to Gorongosa. It quickly became one of the most famous tourist destinations across Africa.

In the Mwani Language, Gorongosa translates to ‘place of danger.’ Gorongosa’s classic story is a tale of rise, fall, and redemption. The wild life, which was destroyed by as much as 90%, has now begun to emerge as a braver and bolder species.

The park has undergone a remarkably fast recovery. In the year 2008, Gorongosa Restoration Project, a Mozambican listed NGO, entered into a twenty year co-management contract with the Government of Mozambique for the refurbishment and growth of the flagship National Park. The park’s delicate success is because of this partnership, which has executed a new form of preservation in the park.

Their approach, which combines traditional conservation biology along with solutions for practical encounters in the community, serves as the model of ecological conservation. If the project succeeds, it will have conserved not only a gorgeous and matchless wild space but also the human relationship we have with it.
