The Makgadikgadi Salt Pans are situated in the north of the country and are amongst the biggest salt flats found on earth, covering six thousand and three hundred square miles (16,000km²) of Kalahari basin. During the yearly rains, the pans turn into the source of fresh water and grass for migrant wildlife, particularly the huge wildebeest and zebra crowds which move throughout the area.
