It isn't an African word with a specific meaning like many other lodges; it's the name of a Shangaan chief who used to live in the area.
Kapama is a privately owned reserve on the outskirts of the Greater Kruger-area and therefore falls outside of the governmentally owned Kruger National Park.
It does! We also have a vast array of other animals, plants and birds, some of which are endangered. Kapama's guides do their best to show you as many as possible.
Kapama has been a wildlife reserve for 27 years and the first camp, Buffalo Camp, opened its doors to the public 19 years ago.
No. We strive to have as little contact as possible with our wild animals so that they continue to behave as wild animals should. Many have become accustomed to the game viewing vehicles and are comfortable with the shape of the vehicle with seated guests. This is why guides request guests stay seated in the vehicles at all times. Wild animals that have had too much direct contact with humans become dangerous, as was the case with the hand-reared lion that attacked a woman in a lion park near Lanseria earlier this year.
It is the Northern Drakensberg Mountain Range, which includes Mariepskop Peak (6378 ft above sea level), that is visible from Kapama.
It is left to break down naturally and fertilise plant life when the rainy season starts. It also is a valuable food source for birds, such as hornbills, starlings and rollers, and part of the reproductive cycle of many insects, such as the dung beetle. It is a natural part of the Kapama ecosystem.
Yes, we do. Many of our staff live with their families in the local community.
No, Kapama does not allow self-drive guests. All guests must be accompanied by a guide when game viewing. Only the clearly marked roads leading to Kapama's camps are safe to travel on without a guide, and these are regularly maintained for guest vehicles. Some guests have seen some great sightings on these roads in and out of the reserve.
Eat 7 times a day! You'll never want to miss out on what we serve up! Trust your guide. They know every nook, cranny and hiding place like the back of their hands, giving you the best chance to find all the animals your dying to see. Do at least one activity. You might not have time for them all, but make time for at least one. Chat to the staff. They are curious about you too!

Many guests purport the elephant interaction opportunity offered at Kapama to be life-changing. After the experience, you will be returned to your lodge in time for lunch and a little relaxation, before high tea and the afternoon game drive.MORE
